It only took a matter of moments for Lexi Townsend's life to change. Her power was taken, her trust lost. Her bubbly personality was smothered by the depressing weight of shame and guilt.

Four years later, Lexi yearns to get back to the former version of herself. A stronger version. One who is no longer afraid to share her story, her body, and her trust. When Private Investigator Cruz Cunningham comes into her life, he proves he’s a man that’s deserving of her trust.

When multiple women in Windsor go missing, it launches Cruz and the Cunningham Security team into action. As Cruz digs deeper into the investigation, he’s torn between finding the missing women and protecting the woman he loves. Putting her faith in Cruz, Lexi never imagines that this case could destroy everything she’s worked so hard to overcome.

WARNING: This novel contains references to rape and sexual assault and may trigger discomfort in some readers.

Lexi Townsend was always an easy going person, bubbly and never had problmes in starting new friendships, but unfortunately she made a really bad error of judgment with the guy she was going out and was victim of one of the worst assaults a woman (anyone actually) can suffer. It took aways from her peace of mind, her happiness, her trust and left behind the bitter taste of the shame and guilty.

Even now, years later, she tries to go back to the way she was before the attack, but even with professional help, some things take time to heal... But Lexi is determined to be a stronger version of herself. Today she works as publicist and has gained some spotlight. But even with her professional life going well, she still struggles with her personal life, especially in having any kind of relationship with men outside her family.

But then Cruz Cunningham walks in and Lexi realize that be around him is different, her reaction towards him is different. And this causes her some apprehension. Since the attack Lexi didn't feel ok to be around men, but for some reason with Cruz she feels safe. And slowly, as Cruz keeps showing up, Lexi starts to see there's more than just feeling safe with him...

Cruz puts his cards on the table about his feelings and when she tells him all what happened to her, he does everything to make Lexi confortable and goingo forward with that thing between them only when she's ready. But a case that Cruz is working on take away his peace of mind and when he sees that Lexi is in the danger range just like those women who went missing, he'd do everything is his power to protect Lexi.

Althought 'Overcome' has a heavy and sensitive plot, it was a interesting reading. The author addresses very well the subject regarding the rape, the victim's shame, guilt, pain and how a victim becomes a survivor. Usually I don't like to read this kind of theme, but A.K. Evans shows us Lexi as a survivor, a woman who didn't accept to be part of the statistics, a woman who fights to take back her life.

Besides all her traumas, Lexi Townsend is strong and determined. Even with fear, she has a career, projects and ambitions. And when Cruz Cunningham shows up, she needs to face her emotions coming back to life. I really like the way the author deals with this problems that Lexi has towards Cruz and wanting more but afraid to step forward in a relationship. Even better was the way Cruz is thoughtful with her even before knowing everything what happened with Lexi.

Cruz Cunningham was, for sure, the icing on the cake. Where do I find a Cruz Cunningham for me?
